What is the Rational Basis for Statistical Analysis?

February 18, 2013

Lesswrong, a community based on rationalism and true ideas, frequently (in what I have seen) attempts to use statistical analysis on “data sets” to draw “conclusions”.

I therefore have a question for anyone with an answer:

Is there a rational basis for statistical analysis within the Lesswrong community? Or is it what is relied on because it encompasses the best tools available and is “correct enough” for most needs?

If nobody can provide a sufficient answer, I wish to request there to be no more discussion regarding anything of “statistical significance” on this online communication medium; as from what I have seen, nothing within the realm of statistics is ever certain which implies it is rather irrational in nature.
